Lost in amongst the 76ers season, the Knicks/Mavs trade and AD wanting out of New Orleans is a former number one pick without any clue to his future.
Now we are getting closer to the trade deadline, the Philadelphia 76ers are yet again (according to local sources) gauging trade interest in the second-year point guard.
After being taken first in the 2017 draft, Fultz has only played in 33 regular season games, posting averages of 7.7 pts, 3.4 reb, 3.4 ast while shooting 41.4% from the field, 26.7 from beyond the arc and 53.4% from the line.
These numbers are nothing special, we all know that - but keep in mind that he has shown flashes of promise in his limited time on court. He notably posted a triple-double in 25 minutes last season and a line of 12 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists in 21 minutes against the Clippers this season.
So why would other teams want him?
Well the answer is, they might not. Fultz has been in and out of the lineup after being diagnosed with thoracic outlet syndrome (for all of you non-medical people, his shoulder is all kinds of fucked up and he can’t shoot for shit) - which leaves the 76ers banking on his status as a former number one pick and other teams needing a point guard.
Who needs a point guard?
Well, the Phoenix Suns, Chicago Bulls and Orlando Magic need one, and Fultz could be a fairly cheap and low-risk gamble to take. The Magic could do a straight Fultz for Mo Bamba swap, this would give Orlando an actual point guard and the 76ers would get an exciting young big man to play alongside or as backup to Joel Embiid. The Suns and Bulls both have a number of low cost, one/two year contracts that could be useful in the short-term before being forgotten about in the summer.
A lot of fans, myself included are still hopeful that Fultz can find a place on the 76ers, he was obviously part of their plans before his injury and it would be interesting to see how he would slot in to their big three.
